The Northeast Superior Regional Broadband Network

The Northeast Superior Regional Broadband Network (NSRBN) is focused on building a broadband network in every community to improve economic growth, resiliency and improved access to health and education services. The availability of adequate and affordable broadband for all citizens and stakeholders is important to the future of the entire region.

Create a Logo & Market Your Thoughts

Earlier this spring, the Superior East CFDC in partnership with the Head Start in Business Initiative delivered two youth entrepreneurship programs called “Create a Logo” and “Market Your Thoughts”. The programs are designed for students in grades 3 to 8 to help promote entrepreneurship. The Create a Logo program asks students in grades 3 to 6 to design a logo for a business. For Market Your Thoughts, the grade 7 & 8 students are asked to write an essay on a business they would like to establish. All schools within the region were invited to participate. The entries are judged by local individuals to determine the winners. The winners were then forwarded to the Northern Regional level for a chance to win $100. Now that the competition has ended, Phil Dittburner, Program Coordinator – Head Start in Business and Chantal Croft, Community Development Officer – Superior East CFDC awarded certificates to students who participated in the two programs and a total of 6 winners within our region. The winners received a cheque for $25 and were also presented with a t-shirt.

Superior East would like to thank all of the schools that participated in this year’s program. In addition, we would like to thank all of the local sponsors who have supported our youth initiatives for many years.

Northeastern Ontario Youth Internship Program

Is your business looking to undertake a project related to innovation, digital economy or trade?

The Northeastern Ontario Youth Internship Program, supported by FedNor and brought to you by your local Community Futures Development Corporation, helps post-secondary graduates obtain crucial professional experience and, in turn, provides Northeastern Ontario businesses with access to educated and motivated young people to help support their goals.

Superior East C.F.D.C. will contribute up to 50% (to a maximum of $31,500.00) for the eligible costs of salary, employee benefit expenses, professional/business skills development and associated travel costs for a period of 12 months in a full-time position.

Superior East Community Development Fund

The Superior East Community Development Fund is available to First Nations, municipalities, economic development corporations or other non-profit community organizations in the Superior East region. The fund can provide up to $2,000 in non-repayable contributions to community projects that will have an economic impact on the region. Regional Mayors Group

The Manager sits as a resource to this committee. The CFDC Business Plan and Annual Performance reports were presented to the group as part of our accountability requirements. The group continues to deal with issues surrounding operations of the municipalities, lobbying politicians, water conservation areas and other issues dealing with economic development are discussed.

PARO Lending Circles

The CFDC has a Letter of Understanding to support the creation of a lending circle for the region. We hosted a dinner for women leaders in the region as well as creating a socio-economic profile for women in the region.

Youth Enterprise Camp

For a twelfth consecutive summer, business-minded youth had their place to shine. The Youth Enterprise Camp was run in Wawa from August 12th to 16th 2019 at Michipicoten Memorial Community Centre.

The camp introduces youth ages 9-13 to the values, attitudes, qualities and skills needed to be successful in today’s economy. High-energy games, activities and workshops challenge every participant to discover their entrepreneurial selves. Campers will develop entrepreneurial and financial awareness, confidence, teamwork and communication skills.

– A summer camp unlike any other camp where campers learn to be their own boss.
– Campers start up, run and close down their own business in one day.
– They learn about entrepreneurship, and enjoy summer camp fun games and activities at the same time.
– Make friends and money at the same time!
– Youth enterprise camp plants the entrepreneurial seed in our youth and teens in a fun exciting summer camp atmosphere.

Campers ran their own “Business for a Day” on Friday, August 16 in front of the post office. They all had a great time even though the weather wasn’t the best for the customers to be out and about. However all the teams were able to sell most of their creations, paid back their loans and brought the rest of the money home. They all had plans on how to invest their earnings.
